Laneway food corridors
The forgotten alley turned into a productive, lit, walked space — fruit on the walls, herbs at the door, eyes on the path.
Origin
Melbourne laneways; older medina and siheyuan service alleys
Materials
- Permission, or a patient agreement with adjoining households
- Espalier fruit, climbing beans, herbs in crates
- A light at each bend and a surface that drains
Method
- 01
Start with one block and the people whose kitchens already open onto it. A city program without those kitchens will be stripped.
- 02
Keep the lane walkable. Production hangs on walls and sits in edges; the middle is a path.
- 03
Plant what can be harvested without a truck: herbs, berries, a pear on a wire, not a field of maize.
- 04
Light the corners. A productive lane that feels unsafe at dusk will not be tended.
- 05
Post a harvest board. Ambiguity is how a shared tree becomes a fight.
What this makes possible
- Calories and flavour a few steps from the stove
- A safer, used back-of-house instead of a dumpster run
- A pattern that can hop from lane to lane without a masterplan
This is a field record, not a permit. Adapt to local law, climate and skill. If you have run this method, send what you learned.
