Community grief tending
A regular, held space for sorrow — personal, ecological, ancestral — so grief does not have to disguise itself as rage or numbness.
Origin
Dagara funeral practice as taught by Malidoma Somé; contemporary grief tending
Materials
- A keeper who has sat in grief themselves
- A threshold, a simple altar, a way to leave
- An agreement that this is not therapy and not a spectacle
Method
- 01
Schedule it. Grief that waits for a crisis arrives as collapse. A monthly village hour is enough to begin.
- 02
Open with a threshold so people know when they are in and when they are out. Uncontained grief floods a room.
- 03
Let sound and silence both be legal. Some will speak; some will not. Neither is a failure.
- 04
Keep the work off the gossip road. What is told in the circle is not content.
- 05
Close the room and eat something simple together. The body needs a way back.
What this makes possible
- Less isolation after a death, a drought, a leaving
- A culture that can feel loss without turning it into a hunt for someone to blame
- Keepers who can be called when the next blow comes
