Neighborhood mediation protocol
A known, boring, written path for the fights that actually happen: noise, boundaries, money, animals, children.
Origin
Community mediation centers; village elders' practice, formalized
Materials
- A one-page protocol posted where people already gather
- Two or three mediators with a rotating roster
- A quiet table and a clock
Method
- 01
Write down the ordinary conflicts, not the cinematic ones. The protocol is for the dog, the fence, the unpaid share.
- 02
Offer a first step that is not a meeting: a written note with a request, delivered without an audience.
- 03
If that fails, a mediated hour with a time limit, equal airtime, and no spectators. The goal is a next action, not a conversion.
- 04
Record only the agreement. Do not keep a file of character.
- 05
Review the roster every season. Mediators burn out; the protocol should outlive any one of them.
What this makes possible
- Fewer disputes that harden into feuds
- A path that does not require a lawyer for a compost bin
- Trust that the neighborhood has a way, not only an opinion
This is a field record, not a permit. Adapt to local law, climate and skill. If you have run this method, send what you learned.
